The Mazda CX-5 is one of our brand’s flagship models. Among its many configurations is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature Diesel. This is a hip and solid compact SUV with luxury features. The main selling point is, of course, the Skyactiv®-D engine. Does it live up to the hype?
More specifically, what lies under the hood is a sequential twin-turbo diesel engine that delivers 168 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. The end result is more refined acceleration and smoother delivery. Even more appealing to buyers is the 20% improvement in fuel economy over diesel engines of the past. The engine is also comprised mainly of aluminum parts, giving it a lower base weight than its predecessors.
Aside from the switch to more aluminum, some of the hoses and duct components have been redesigned with DuPont™ Viton® fluoroelastomer parts. This synthetic combination of plastic and rubber moldings produces a surface that is better able to withstand extreme engine heat temperatures.
That’s not all. The engine also has the lowest compression ratio ever in any diesel engine, but it remains fully compliant with U.S. and global emission standards.
The diesel engine option is available in the upper trims. This means an elevated driving experience that includes a layered wood dashboard trim, stitched leather steering wheel, and Caturra Brown Nappa leather seats. The total is a driving package that delivers improved fuel economy, smoother navigation, and a luxury car cabin feel all rolled into one.
